This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply advanced editing skills to a range of written texts in different forms.

It applies to editors who independently evaluate and refine print-based or screen-based written materials to publication standards. The editing process includes the review of substance and structure to enhance the clarity of written communication. Collaboration with authors, clients, publishers and colleagues plays a significant role in the refinement of the product.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Discuss evaluation of written material with relevant parties to establish the editing approach 
Outline actions necessary to complete the editing process 
Confirm actions and timelines for completing the editing process with relevant parties 
Restructure text where necessary to add, delete or relocate material. 
Refine paragraphs to suit purpose, text type and publication mode. 
Add headings, lists and emphasis if necessary to ensure ease of reading 
Check citations for accuracy and appropriateness in recognising the works of others 
Check all structural elements including illustrative material for logic, consistency, appropriateness and accessibility. 
Consider whether voice, tone and tense and are appropriate to the written material. 
Edit phrases, sentences, paragraphs and sections where required for clarity and logical flow. 
Check language complexity, terminology and formality to ensure they are appropriate for the purpose and audience 
Refine grammar, spelling and punctuation using standard editing conventions 
Check appropriate style conventions are used for numbers, quotations, titles, headings, illustrations and tables within written material 
Check preliminary text, body and end text for consistency 
Proofread written material for language, grammar, spelling, punctuation and factual errors 
Check cross-references and links for accuracy and completeness 
Test written material for performance, usability and accessibility. 
Review format and layout for consistency, against design or style guides if required 
Confirm content complies with copyright and intellectual property requirements 
Complete editing process within required timeframes
